Find the Live Metal Prices
Look up the current market price of gold and silver per gram in your local currency. Ensure you are using the price for pure raw metal (24k gold), not retail jewelry pricing.
Select Your Nisab Standard
Decide whether you are using the gold standard (85 grams) or the silver standard (595 grams). Many scholars recommend the silver standard for charity as it sets a lower threshold, allowing more people to contribute to those in need.
Perform the Multiplication
Multiply the price per gram of your chosen metal by its respective weight standard. For gold, multiply the price by 85. For silver, multiply the price by 595.
Compare with Your Personal Wealth
Compare the resulting figure with your total qualifying assets (cash, savings, gold, silver, shares, business merchandise) minus your immediate liabilities (debts, bills due). If your wealth is higher than the calculated Nisab for a full lunar year, you are eligible to pay Zakat.
Calculating your Zakat is a beautiful, rewarding act of worship that connects our financial health with our spiritual well-being. But before you can give Zakat, you need to know if your wealth has reached the required minimum threshold, known as the Nisab.
If your qualifying personal wealth is equal to or greater than the Nisab threshold for an entire Islamic year (Hawl), you are eligible to pay Zakat. In this guide, we will walk you through how to calculate this threshold manually using both the gold and silver standards. Knowing how to do this by hand helps you connect deeply with the process, although you can always use a digital calculator for quick, daily updates!
Prerequisites
Before you start your calculations, make sure you have the following information handy:
- Current Price of Gold per Gram in your local currency (e.g., USD, GBP, PKR).
- Current Price of Silver per Gram in your local currency.
- A Notepad and Calculator to write down your steps.
Note: Make sure you are looking at the price per gram, not per troy ounce, which is how precious metals are often priced on global markets.
The Formulas
Historically, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) established the Nisab based on two precious metals: gold and silver. Today, we translate those weight measurements into modern metric weights:
- Gold Nisab Standard: 85 grams of pure gold (24-karat)
- Silver Nisab Standard: 595 grams of pure silver
Depending on the school of Islamic jurisprudence (Madhab) you follow or your local community's guidelines, you will use one of these two standards to calculate your threshold.
The Gold Formula:
KBLK0
The Silver Formula:
KBLK1
Worked Example (Using Real Numbers)
Let's assume you live in the United States, and you want to calculate the Nisab using today's hypothetical metal prices:
- Hypothetical Gold Price: $68.50 per gram
- Hypothetical Silver Price: $0.82 per gram
1. Calculating the Gold Nisab:
KBLK2 Under the gold standard, your Zakat threshold is $5,822.50.
2. Calculating the Silver Nisab:
KBLK3 Under the silver standard, your Zakat threshold is $487.90.
If your total qualifying net savings and assets exceed the threshold you are following for a full lunar year, you pay 2.5% of your total wealth as Zakat.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
- Confusing Grams with Ounces: Global market rates for gold and silver are usually quoted in "troy ounces" (1 troy ounce = 31.1035 grams). Always convert the price to grams before multiplying by 85 or 595!
- Using Jewelry Retail Prices: When looking up the metal price, use the raw commodity/scrap market price. Do not use the retail price of finished jewelry, which includes high markup costs for design and craftsmanship.
- Forgetting the Year Cycle (Hawl): Reaching the Nisab is just the starting point. You must maintain wealth at or above this threshold for one continuous Islamic (lunar) year before Zakat becomes due on that wealth.
When to Use an Online Calculator
While doing this calculation manually is an excellent way to understand the mechanics of Zakat, market prices for gold and silver fluctuate every minute. Using an online Nisab Threshold Calculator is highly recommended when you are ready to make your final payment, as it automatically pulls real-time, live market rates in your exact local currency, saving you time and ensuring pinpoint accuracy.
