Find Your Longitude
Locate the exact longitude of your city using a map tool. Remember that locations west of the Prime Meridian use a negative value (e.g., -87.6° for Chicago).
Look Up the Equation of Time (EoT)
Find the EoT value for today's date using an online solar ephemeris table. This value is usually provided in minutes and represents the deviation from mean solar time.
Calculate the Longitude Offset
Divide your longitude by 15. This tells you how many hours your location is ahead of or behind the Prime Meridian (Greenwich).
Solve the Equation
Subtract the longitude offset and the EoT from 12:00 PM. Convert the decimal result back into minutes by multiplying the remainder by 60.
Adjust for Local Time
Convert your UTC result to your local time zone by adding or subtracting the offset from UTC. Don't forget to add an extra hour if Daylight Saving Time is active.
Understanding Solar Noon
Solar noon occurs when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky for a specific location. Unlike clock noon, which is determined by time zones and daylight saving, solar noon is strictly defined by the sun's position relative to your longitude. Calculating this manually helps you understand how the Earth's rotation and orbit interact with our timekeeping systems.
The Core Formula
To find solar noon, we use the following relationship: Solar Noon (UTC) = 12:00 - (Longitude / 15) - Equation of Time (EoT)
Prerequisites
- Your exact longitude (in decimal degrees).
- The current Equation of Time (EoT) value for the day (found in a standard solar ephemeris table). The EoT accounts for the fact that the Earth's orbit is elliptical and its axis is tilted.
Worked Example
Let’s calculate solar noon for Chicago, Illinois (Longitude: -87.6°), assuming an EoT value of -5 minutes (-0.083 hours).
- Convert Longitude to Time Offset: Divide -87.6 by 15. Result: -5.84 hours.
- Apply the Formula: 12:00 - (-5.84) - (-0.083) = 12:00 + 5.84 + 0.083 = 17.923 UTC.
- Convert to Local Time: Chicago is in Central Standard Time (UTC-6). 17.923 - 6 = 11.923.
- Convert Decimal to Minutes: 0.923 * 60 = 55.38. Solar noon is approximately 11:55 AM.
Common Pitfalls
- Ignoring Daylight Saving Time: If your area is in Daylight Saving, remember to add one hour to your final result.
- Sign Errors: Longitude is negative for the Western Hemisphere. Double-check your signs when subtracting negative numbers.
- EoT Variability: The Equation of Time changes every day. Using an outdated table will result in an inaccurate calculation.
When to Use the Calculator
While doing the math manually is a fantastic way to grasp the mechanics of solar geometry, it can be tedious to look up the EoT value every single day. Use our online Solar Noon Calculator when you need quick, precise timing for solar panels, photography, or gardening, especially when you need to account for rapid seasonal changes automatically.
