How to Calculate Ideal Height Weight

What is Ideal Height Weight?

Ideal weight formulas (Robinson, Devine) give population-based estimates of healthy weight for height. They are guides, not targets — muscle mass and body composition cause significant individual variation.

Formula

Ideal body weight (IBW) = 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5'0" (women); 50 kg + 2.7 kg per inch over 5'0" (men); BMI = Weight / (Height^2) for BMI-based estimate
Height
Height in inches or cm (Inches or cm)
IBW
Ideal body weight (kg)
BMI
Body mass index (kg/m² (18.5–24.9 normal))

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. 1Robinson (men): 52 + 1.9 × (height_inches − 60)
  2. 2Robinson (women): 49 + 1.7 × (height_inches − 60)
  3. 3BMI 18.5–24.9 gives a broader healthy weight range
  4. 4Athletes often weigh more due to muscle mass

Worked Examples

Input
Female, 165cm (65")
Result
Robinson: 57.5 kg; BMI healthy range: 50.5–67.9 kg

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ideal body weight realistic for everyone?

Estimates are rough. Genetics, muscle mass, bone density vary widely. Someone at 110% IBW may be perfectly healthy (athletic, muscular). Use as guide, not target.

What if I'm muscular and BMI says overweight?

BMI doesn't distinguish muscle from fat. Athletes often "overweight" by BMI but lean. Use body composition (DEXA, calipers), photos, how clothes fit. BMI supplementary.

Should I focus on BMI or weight?

Health markers (blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, inflammation) more important than absolute weight. You can be "overweight" BMI but metabolically healthy. Focus on feeling strong/energetic.
