Pro Tip

The most reliable watering method for most houseplants: water thoroughly (until water runs from drainage holes), then wait until the appropriate soil depth feels dry before watering again. This 'soak and dry' approach mimics natural rainfall patterns and encourages healthy root development. Invest in a $10-$15 soil moisture meter if you struggle with the finger test — it removes guesswork and is especially useful for large pots where you can't easily reach deep soil.

Did you know?

The oldest known potted houseplant in the world is an Eastern Cape giant cycad (Encephalartos altensteinii) at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in London. It was brought from South Africa in 1775 and has been growing in a pot (and later a large planter) for nearly 250 years. Despite being a 'houseplant,' it now weighs over a ton and has been watered by Kew gardeners for over two centuries — making it possibly the most consistently watered plant in human history.
