Petunjuk Langkah demi Langkah

1

Identify Your Monthly Taxable Income

Find your monthly gross salary and subtract any non-taxable allowances (such as standard meal or vehicle allowances up to legal limits) to determine your taxable income.

2

Calculate the Health Insurance Premium

Multiply your taxable income by the current rate of 7.09% to find the total premium, then divide by 2 to find your individual employee share (or simply multiply your income by 3.545%).

3

Calculate the Long-Term Care Premium

Multiply your individual Health Insurance premium by the current Long-Term Care rate of 12.95% to find your individual long-term care contribution.

4

Apply Korean Won Truncation

Round down your calculated figures to the nearest 10 Won (drop any single-digit amounts under 10 KRW) to match standard Korean payroll practices.

5

Sum the Final Premiums

Add your rounded individual Health Insurance premium and Long-Term Care premium together to get your total monthly health insurance deduction.

Demystifying Korean National Health Insurance Calculations

Moving to or working in South Korea comes with many exciting opportunities, but understanding your payslip can sometimes feel like learning a whole new language! One of the most important deductions you will see is the Korean National Health Insurance (국민건강보험), which also includes a secondary contribution for Long-Term Care Insurance (노인장기요양보험).

If you are an employee (known as a 직장가입자 or company-insured individual), you do not have to pay the entire premium yourself. Your employer generously splits the cost with you 50/50!

In this guide, we will break down the exact formulas used to calculate these premiums for the year 2024. By learning to do this calculation manually, you will gain a clear understanding of where your money goes and how to check your payroll for accuracy.

The Prerequisites: What You Need to Know

Before we start crunching the numbers, you will need two key pieces of information:

  1. Your Monthly Taxable Income (보수월액): This is your base salary plus any regular taxable bonuses or allowances. It excludes non-taxable perks like a standard meal allowance (up to 200,000 KRW per month).
  2. The Current Premium Rates (2024 Rates):
    • Health Insurance Rate: 7.09% of your monthly taxable income.
    • Long-Term Care Insurance Rate: 12.95% of your calculated Health Insurance premium (not your total salary!).

Let's dive into the formulas and see how they work in action!

The Formulas

To calculate your individual (employee) share, we use two primary formulas:

Formula 1: Employee Health Insurance Premium

KBLK0 Alternatively, you can simply multiply your income by your personal share of 3.545% (which is KINL2).

Formula 2: Employee Long-Term Care Premium

KBLK1

Note on Rounding: In the Korean financial system, payroll deductions are subject to won unit truncation (원단위 절사). This means you round down any amount under 10 KRW. For example, 13,772 KRW becomes 13,770 KRW.

Worked Example: Calculating with Real Numbers

Let's assume your monthly taxable income is 3,000,000 KRW.

Step 1: Calculate Your Health Insurance Premium

First, we find the total health insurance premium and split it in half:

  • Total Premium: KINL3
  • Employee Share (50%): KINL4

Your individual Health Insurance contribution is 106,350 KRW.

Step 2: Calculate Your Long-Term Care Premium

Next, we calculate the Long-Term Care premium based on your individual health insurance premium:

  • Employee Share: KINL5

Applying the Korean won unit truncation rule, we drop the last digit (2.325) to round down to the nearest 10 won:

  • Your individual Long-Term Care contribution is 13,770 KRW.

Step 3: Find Your Total Deduction

Finally, add both premiums together to find your total monthly deduction:

  • Total Deduction: KINL6

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Calculating Long-Term Care from Total Salary: This is the most common mistake! Always remember that the 12.95% Long-Term Care rate applies directly to your Health Insurance premium, not your base salary.
  • Using Outdated Rates: The Korean government adjusts these rates slightly from year to year to match healthcare demands. Always make sure you are using the active year's rates.
  • Confusing Employee vs. Regional Subscribers: This manual guide is for company employees (직장가입자). If you are self-employed or a freelancer (지역가입자), your calculation is based on a complex point system that factors in your personal assets, property, and vehicles.

When to Use an Online Calculator

While calculating your premiums by hand is a fantastic way to understand the underlying math, using a dedicated online Korean Health Insurance calculator is highly recommended when:

  • You are self-employed (regional subscriber) and need to factor in property points.
  • You want to quickly estimate your net take-home pay during salary negotiations.
  • You want to avoid manual rounding errors and ensure 100% precision with the latest government tables.
