Free Cash Flow (FCF) is the cash a business generates after accounting for the capital expenditures needed to maintain and grow its asset base. It represents the actual cash available to all investors — equity holders and debt holders alike — after the company has paid for its operating expenses and reinvested in its business. Unlike net income, which is an accounting construct subject to non-cash adjustments and accrual timing, FCF is rooted in actual cash movements and is far harder to manipulate. Despite generating positive operating cash flow, this company is FCF-negative because it is aggressively building out fulfillment centers and technology infrastructure. This is not necessarily alarming — the $450M capex is largely growth investment that should generate future returns. Investors must judge whether the return on that capex will justify the cash burn.
NOPAT = $300M × 0.75 = $225M. Add D&A: $225M + $80M = $305M. Subtract working capital increase: $305M − $20M = $285M. Subtract capex: $285M − $60M = $225M.
