1

Gather Your Financial Data

Collect your gross revenue for the current month and your cumulative gross revenue over the past 12 months (RBT12). You will also need to identify which Simples Nacional Annex applies to your business activity.

2

Identify Your Tax Bracket

Locate the correct Annex table. Find the row (bracket) where your RBT12 fits. Note the corresponding Nominal Rate and Deduction Amount for that specific bracket.

3

Calculate the Effective Tax Rate

Apply the formula: (RBT12 multiplied by Nominal Rate, minus the Deduction Amount) divided by RBT12. Convert the resulting decimal into a percentage to get your Effective Tax Rate.

4

Determine Your Tax Due

Multiply your current month's gross revenue by the Effective Tax Rate you calculated in Step 3. This final figure is the total amount you will pay on your monthly DAS slip.

Hello, entrepreneur! If you run a small business in Brazil, you have likely heard of the Simples Nacional. This unified tax regime is designed to make life easier for Microempresas (ME) and Empresas de Pequeno Porte (EPP) by combining up to eight federal, state, and municipal taxes into a single monthly payment called the DAS (Documento de Arrecadação do Simples Nacional).

While the system is "simpler" than other regimes, calculating the actual tax amount by hand can still feel a bit daunting. Don't worry! We are going to break down the formula step-by-step so you can confidently calculate your tax liability and understand exactly where your money is going.

(Note: If you are a MEI - Microempreendedor Individual, you do not need this formula! MEIs pay a fixed monthly fee regardless of their revenue, as long as they stay under the annual limit).

Prerequisites: What You Need to Get Started

Before we dive into the math, you will need to gather three key pieces of information:

  1. Your Current Month's Gross Revenue (Faturamento Mensal): The total amount you invoiced in the month you are calculating.
  2. Your RBT12 (Receita Bruta Total acumulada nos últimos 12 meses): The sum of your gross revenue over the previous 12 months. This determines your tax bracket.
  3. Your Simples Nacional Annex (Anexo): The Simples Nacional is divided into 5 Annexes depending on your business activity (e.g., commerce, industry, or services). Each Annex has its own table of progressive tax rates and deductions.

The Simples Nacional Formula

Unlike traditional flat-rate taxes, the Simples Nacional uses a progressive scale. To find your actual tax rate, you must first calculate your Effective Tax Rate (Alíquota Efetiva) using this formula:

KBLK0

Once you have the Effective Rate, you calculate your tax due for the month:

KBLK1

A Worked Example with Real Numbers

Let's put this into practice! Imagine you run an IT consulting firm classified under Annex III (Services). Here are your business's numbers:

  • Current Month's Revenue: R$ 20,000.00
  • RBT12 (Past 12 Months): R$ 300,000.00

Step 1: Find Your Bracket in Annex III

Looking at the official Annex III table, a business with an RBT12 of RKINL6 180,000.01 to R$ 360,000.00). For this bracket:

  • Nominal Rate: 11.2% (0.112)
  • Deduction (Parcela a Deduzir): R$ 9,360.00

Step 2: Calculate the Effective Tax Rate

Plug these numbers into our first formula:

  1. Multiply RBT12 by the Nominal Rate: KBLK2
  2. Subtract the Deduction: KBLK3
  3. Divide by the RBT12: KBLK4

Multiply by 100 to get a percentage, and your Effective Tax Rate is 8.08%.

Step 3: Calculate Your Monthly Tax (DAS)

Now apply this effective rate to your current month's revenue:

KBLK5

Your DAS payment for this month will be R$ 1,616.00.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Confusing Nominal Rate with Effective Rate: Many business owners look at the Annex table, see "11.2%", and assume they will pay 11.2% on their revenue. As you can see from our example, the actual effective rate (8.08%) is lower thanks to the deduction bracket!
  • Forgetting the Factor R (Fator R): For certain service businesses (Annex V), if your payroll costs represent 28% or more of your revenue, you can migrate to Annex III (which has much lower tax rates). Failing to calculate this monthly can cost you thousands of Reais.
  • Using the Wrong Annex: Selling products (Commerce - Annex I) has completely different tax brackets than providing services (Annex III, IV, or V). Ensure your CNAE codes align with the correct Annex.

When to Use an Online Calculator

While calculating this by hand is fantastic for budgeting and understanding your business financials, doing it manually every month leaves room for human error. An online Simples Nacional Calculator is highly recommended for:

  • Speed: Instant calculations in seconds.
  • Accuracy: Automatically applies updated tax tables and handles complex rules like Factor R.
  • Scenario Planning: Easily estimate how a jump in sales might affect your tax bracket next month.
