There are factories and small establishments in India that closed down to 3-4 employees but still technically owe gratuity to their remaining staff from the years when they were covered. The ₹20 lakh tax-free limit, set in 2018, has not been indexed for inflation — at 6% annual inflation, its real purchasing power erodes by ₹1.2 lakh every year.
