Gather Your Measurements
Measure your weight in kilograms and your height and waist circumference in meters. Ensure your waist measurement is taken at the iliac crest, not at your belly button.
Calculate Your BMI
Divide your weight (kg) by your height (m) squared. Keep this number handy, as it is the foundation of the ABSI calculation.
Perform the Power Operations
Calculate your BMI raised to the power of 2/3 (or 0.666) and your height raised to the power of 0.5 (the square root).
Complete the Formula
Multiply your results from Step 3 together to get your denominator. Finally, divide your waist circumference by this denominator to get your ABSI score.
Check Your Risk
Compare your result to clinical reference tables. If your score is high, use this information to start a conversation with your doctor about your metabolic health.
Understanding the A-Body-Shape Index (ABSI)
The A-Body-Shape Index (ABSI) is a health metric designed to provide a more nuanced view of your body composition than the traditional Body Mass Index (BMI). While BMI only considers height and weight, ABSI focuses on your waist circumference, which is a key indicator of visceral fat—the fat stored around your organs that is most closely linked to metabolic health issues.
Why ABSI Matters
Research suggests that a high ABSI is associated with a higher risk of premature mortality. Because it accounts for how weight is distributed, it can help identify health risks even in individuals who might have a 'normal' BMI but carry excess weight around the midsection.
The ABSI Formula
To calculate your ABSI, you will need your Waist Circumference (WC), Weight, and Height. The formula is:
ABSI = Waist Circumference / (BMI^(2/3) * Height^(1/2))
(Note: All measurements should be in meters and kilograms. BMI is calculated as weight in kg / height in meters squared.)
Worked Example
Let’s calculate the ABSI for a person who is 1.75m tall, weighs 80kg, and has a waist circumference of 0.95m.
- Calculate BMI: 80 / (1.75 * 1.75) = 26.12
- Calculate BMI to the power of 2/3: 26.12^0.666 = 8.68
- Calculate Height to the power of 1/2 (Square Root): √1.75 = 1.32
- Combine the denominator: 8.68 * 1.32 = 11.46
- Final Division: 0.95 / 11.46 = 0.0829
Interpreting Your Results
ABSI is typically compared against population averages. A value higher than the average for your age and sex indicates a higher relative risk. Generally, an ABSI of 0.075 to 0.085 is common for adults, but you should always consult a clinical chart or a healthcare provider to understand your specific risk profile.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
- Measurement Error: Always measure your waist at the level of the iliac crest (top of the hip bone) while standing relaxed. Do not 'suck in' your stomach.
- Unit Confusion: Ensure you convert inches to meters (1 inch = 0.0254 meters) before starting. Mixing units is the #1 cause of calculation errors.
- Clinical Context: ABSI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic one. It does not replace a doctor's physical examination or blood work.
