Take-home pay (net pay) is gross salary minus all deductions: federal income tax, FICA (Social Security + Medicare), state income tax, and voluntary deductions (401k, health insurance). The effective tax rate is often much lower than the marginal rate.

Steg-för-steg-guide

  1. 1Federal income tax: progressive brackets (10–37% in 2024)
  2. 2FICA: 6.2% Social Security (on first $168,600) + 1.45% Medicare = 7.65%
  3. 3State income tax: 0% (TX, FL, WA) to 13.3% (CA top bracket)
  4. 4Effective tax rate = Total taxes / Gross income (always lower than marginal rate)
