1

Identify Your Target Cohort Sums

Find the Basic Retirement Sum (BRS) and Full Retirement Sum (FRS) set by the CPF Board for the year you turn 55. If your cohort year hasn't been announced yet, project it by adding a 3.5% annual increase to the last known figures.

2

Simulate Your RA Creation

At age 55, sum up your SA and OA balances. Transfer your entire SA balance to your new Retirement Account (RA) first. If your RA is still below your target retirement sum (e.g., FRS), transfer funds from your OA until the target is met or your OA is empty.

3

Calculate Remaining Balances

Subtract the transferred amounts from your SA and OA. Any remaining balances in your OA and SA will continue to earn interest, and you can choose to withdraw them or leave them to grow.

4

Estimate Your CPF LIFE Payout

To estimate your monthly payout at age 65, multiply your age 55 RA balance by 0.008 (for FRS-level balances). For a more precise calculation, assume your RA compounds at a 4% to 6% annual interest rate over the next 10 years, and expect a payout of roughly 6.5% to 7.5% of that final age 65 balance annually, divided by 12.

Demystifying Your CPF Retirement Planning

Planning for retirement in Singapore can feel like solving a complex puzzle, but it doesn't have to be! The Central Provident Fund (CPF) system is designed to provide you with a secure retirement income through CPF LIFE (Lifelong Income For the Elderly).

At age 55, a new account called the Retirement Account (RA) is created for you. Balances from your Special Account (SA) and Ordinary Account (OA) are transferred here to form your retirement sum. This guide will teach you how to manually calculate your Retirement Sum targets—Basic Retirement Sum (BRS), Full Retirement Sum (FRS), and Enhanced Retirement Sum (ERS)—and estimate your future monthly payouts.

Prerequisites: What You Need to Know

Before you start your calculations, gather the following information:

  1. Your Current Age: Specifically, how many years you have until you turn 55 or 65.
  2. Your OA and SA Balances: You can find these by logging into your CPF portal.
  3. Your Cohort's Retirement Sums: CPF adjusts the BRS, FRS, and ERS annually to account for inflation. You will need the specific numbers for the year you turn 55.

The Formulas and Rules of Thumb

To perform these calculations manually, we use three primary rules:

  1. The Retirement Sum Ratios:

    • Full Retirement Sum (FRS) = Base FRS for your cohort year.
    • Basic Retirement Sum (BRS) = KINL4
    • Enhanced Retirement Sum (ERS) = KINL5 (for cohorts up to 2024) or KINL6 (starting from 2025 onwards).
  2. Retirement Account (RA) Creation Rule: At age 55, savings from your SA are transferred to your RA first, followed by savings from your OA, up to your FRS limit.

  3. CPF LIFE Payout Rule of Thumb: While CPF LIFE payouts depend on gender, plan type, and interest rates, a reliable rule of thumb for the Standard Plan is that for every KINL775 to $85 per month for life. Alternatively, if you set aside the FRS at age 55, your estimated monthly payout at age 65 is roughly 0.8% of your FRS amount (e.g., setting aside KINL81,600 to $1,730/month).

Worked Example: Sarah's Retirement Path

Let's walk through a realistic example using 2025 figures:

  • Cohort Year: 2025 (Sarah turns 55 in 2025)
  • 2025 BRS: $106,500
  • 2025 FRS: $213,000
  • 2025 ERS: $426,000 (4 times BRS)
  • Sarah's Balances at 55: Special Account (SA) = KINL9150,000

Step 1: Calculate the RA Balance at Age 55

First, we empty Sarah's SA into her RA: KBLK0

Next, we top up the RA to the FRS ($213,000) using her OA: KBLK1

Sarah has KINL10113,000 is transferred from her OA to her RA.

  • Sarah's RA Balance at age 55: $213,000 (Full Retirement Sum met!)
  • Sarah's remaining OA Balance: KINL11150,000 - \KINL1237,000$
  • Sarah's remaining SA Balance: $0

Step 2: Estimate Her CPF LIFE Monthly Payout at Age 65

Using our payout estimation formula for the FRS cohort of 2025: KBLK2 KBLK3

According to official CPF estimates for 2025, setting aside the FRS of KINL131,600 to KINL141,704 is incredibly close and highly useful for planning!

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Assuming Sums are Static: CPF retirement sums increase by about 3.5% annually to keep up with inflation. Don't use today's FRS if you are turning 55 in ten years!
  • Forgetting the SA-First Rule: SA balances are always transferred to the RA before OA balances. Because SA earns higher interest, this maximizes your early compounding growth.
  • Pledging Property Without Understanding: If you choose to meet only the BRS (instead of FRS) by pledging your property, your monthly CPF LIFE payouts will be roughly halved. Make sure you are comfortable with a lower monthly income.

When to Use an Online CPF Calculator

While manual calculations give you a fantastic conceptual understanding, you should use an online CPF Retirement Sum Calculator when:

  • You want to calculate exact compound interest rates (including extra interest on the first $60,000 of your combined balances).
  • You want to compare the Standard, Basic, and Escalating CPF LIFE plans.
  • You plan to make cash top-ups or voluntary contributions and want to see their immediate impact on your future payouts.
