1

Sum Your Cash and Liquid Assets

Add up all the cash your business holds. This includes cash in registers, safe boxes, and all business checking, savings, or digital payment merchant accounts (like PayPal or Stripe).

2

Value Your Current Inventory

Determine the current wholesale value (cost price to buy it today) of all raw materials, work-in-progress items, and finished goods meant for resale. Do not use retail selling prices.

3

Add Good Receivables

Include any outstanding invoices or business loans you have extended to others, provided you are confident and expect that they will be paid back to you.

4

Deduct Short-Term Liabilities

Subtract your immediate business expenses, outstanding bills (like rent and utilities), and any debt installments due within the current lunar year.

5

Check Against Nisab and Calculate 2.5%

Compare your net Zakat Pool to the current Nisab threshold. If your pool exceeds Nisab, multiply your total net Zakat Pool by 0.025 (2.5%) to find your Zakat due.

Introduction

Assalamu Alaikum! If you are a business owner, calculating Zakat is a beautiful way to purify your wealth, show gratitude to the Almighty, and bless your business endeavors. Zakat is not just a tax; it is a spiritual tool that keeps wealth circulating in the community to support those in need.

While calculating Zakat for a business might seem overwhelming at first with all the inventory, cash flow, and invoices to manage, it is actually very straightforward once you break it down. In this guide, we will teach you how to calculate your business Zakat manually, step-by-step, using a simple formula.

Prerequisites: The Rules of Zakat

Before you start adding up your numbers, make sure your business meets these two core Islamic requirements:

  1. Nisab (The Threshold): Your total net assets must be equal to or greater than the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. Most scholars recommend using the silver standard for charity to maximize the benefit to the poor.
  2. Hawl (The Lunar Year): You must have held Zakat-eligible wealth equal to or above the Nisab threshold for one full lunar year (354 days).

The Business Zakat Formula

To find your Zakat obligation, we first need to determine your Zakat Pool (your net Zakat-eligible assets). The formula is:

KBLK0

Once you have your Zakat Pool, if it is above the Nisab threshold, you calculate your Zakat owed using this formula:

KBLK1

Step-by-Step Worked Example

Let's walk through an example together! Imagine you run a small retail business called "Modest Threads." Here are your business financials on your Zakat anniversary date:

  • Cash on hand & in bank accounts: $8,000
  • Inventory value (at wholesale cost): $12,000
  • Receivables (money customers owe you that you expect to receive): $2,000
  • Short-term liabilities (bills/debts due within the next year): $3,000
  • Fixed assets (computers, shop fittings, delivery van): $15,000 (Note: We do not include these!)

Let's apply our formula:

Step 1: Calculate Your Zakat-Eligible Assets

Add up your cash, inventory, and good receivables: KBLK2

Step 2: Subtract Your Eligible Liabilities

Subtract your short-term business debts and upcoming bills: KBLK3

Step 3: Compare with Nisab

Let's assume the current silver Nisab value is approximately KINL519,000** is greater than $5,000, Zakat is due on your pool.

Step 4: Calculate the 2.5% Zakat

KBLK4

In this example, your business Zakat payment for the year is $475.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Including Fixed Assets: A common mistake is including the value of your office, factory, machinery, tools, computers, or delivery vehicles. These are exempt from Zakat because they are not meant for resale.
  • Valuing Inventory at Retail Prices: Always value your inventory at its current wholesale cost (what it would cost you to replace it today), not the retail price you hope to sell it for.
  • Counting "Bad Debts": If a customer owes you money but you are highly doubtful they will ever pay you back, do not include it in your receivables.
  • Subtracting Long-Term Loans: Only subtract short-term liabilities (due within the next 12 months). Do not subtract the entire remaining balance of a multi-year commercial mortgage or long-term business loan.
