1

Calculate Your Fiber Contribution

Identify your average daily fiber intake in grams. Divide this number by 5. For example, if you eat 20g of fiber, your score for this section is 4. Cap this section at 10 points.

2

Assess Dietary Diversity

Count how many unique plant-based foods (fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains) you have consumed over the last 7 days. Assign 2 points for every 5 unique items. Cap this section at 10 points.

3

Factor in Lifestyle Habits

Add 5 points if you exercise at least 150 minutes per week. Add 5 points if you average 7+ hours of sleep. Subtract 5 points if you experience high daily stress levels.

4

Sum Your Total

Add the totals from the previous three steps. A score of 20-25 is excellent, 15-19 is good, and 14 or below suggests you should prioritize more plant diversity and fiber in your next grocery shop.

Understanding Your Gut Health Score

Your gut microbiome is a complex ecosystem influenced by what you eat and how you live. While advanced medical testing requires stool samples, you can estimate your 'Gut Health Score' using a standardized scoring system based on fiber intake, dietary diversity, and lifestyle habits. This manual calculation helps you identify areas where small tweaks can lead to significant improvements in your digestive well-being.

The Core Formula

To calculate your score, we use a weighted point system. Your total score is the sum of three main categories:

Total Score = (Fiber Points) + (Diversity Points) + (Lifestyle Points)

  • Fiber Points: Assign 1 point for every 5 grams of fiber consumed daily (Max 10 points).
  • Diversity Points: Assign 2 points for every unique plant-based food eaten in a week (Max 10 points).
  • Lifestyle Points: Add 5 points for regular exercise, 5 points for 7+ hours of sleep, and subtract 5 points for high daily stress.

Worked Example

Let’s look at 'Sarah,' who wants to calculate her score:

  1. Fiber: Sarah eats 25g of fiber daily. (25 / 5 = 5 points).
  2. Diversity: She ate 15 unique plant foods this week. (15 unique / 5 = 3 points, but let's say 2 points per 5 unique foods = 6 points).
  3. Lifestyle: She sleeps 7 hours (+5) and exercises (+5), but has high stress (-5). (5 + 5 - 5 = 5 points). Total: 5 + 6 + 5 = 16 out of a possible 25 points.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Overestimating Fiber: People often guess their fiber intake. Use a tracking app for three days to get an accurate baseline rather than guessing.
  • Ignoring Liquid Calories: Remember that fiber is found in whole foods, not juices. Ensure you count the whole fruit or vegetable.
  • Consistency: One healthy day doesn't change your microbiome. This score reflects your average weekly habits, not just what you ate today.

When to Use the Online Calculator

While doing this by hand is a great way to learn, our online calculator is perfect for ongoing tracking. It automatically adjusts for seasonal dietary changes and keeps a historical log of your progress so you can see trends over months rather than just days.
