Is Social Security going bankrupt?

No—Social Security will not go bankrupt or disappear, but it does face a funding shortfall. The Social Security trust funds (OASI for retirement and DI for disability) are projected to be depleted around 2033-2035 (per the 2024 Trustees Report). This does NOT mean benefits stop—it means the trust fund reserves (accumulated surplus from decades of payroll tax revenue exceeding benefit payments) will be exhausted. After depletion, ongoing payroll tax revenue would still cover approximately 77-80% of scheduled benefits. The revenue never stops because payroll taxes are continuously collected from current workers.

How does Social Security interact with other retirement income for tax purposes?

Up to 85% of Social Security benefits may be taxable, depending on your 'combined income' (also called provisional income): combined income = AGI + nontaxable interest + 50% of Social Security benefits. If combined income is below $25,000 (single) or $32,000 (married filing jointly), 0% of benefits are taxed. If it is between $25,000-$34,000 (single) or $32,000-$44,000 (married), up to 50% of benefits are taxed. Above those thresholds, up to 85% of benefits are taxed. Planning strategies include Roth conversions before claiming Social Security to keep combined income low.

How is my Social Security retirement benefit calculated?

Your Social Security retirement benefit is primarily based on your Average Indexed Monthly Earnings (AIME), which are your highest 35 years of earnings adjusted for inflation. This AIME is then applied to a progressive formula using 'bend points' to determine your Primary Insurance Amount (PIA). For 2024, the PIA formula is 90% of the first $1,174 of AIME, plus 32% of AIME between $1,174 and $7,077, plus 15% of AIME over $7,077.

What is the earliest and latest age to claim Social Security retirement benefits, and how do they affect the payout?

You can claim Social Security retirement benefits as early as age 62, but this results in a permanent reduction of up to 30% from your Full Retirement Age (FRA) benefit. Conversely, delaying benefits past your FRA, up to age 70, earns Delayed Retirement Credits (DRCs) at 8% per year. This means claiming at age 70 could increase your monthly benefit by 24% to 32% compared to your FRA amount.

How many work credits do I need to qualify for Social Security retirement benefits?

To qualify for Social Security retirement benefits, most individuals need 40 work credits, which typically equates to 10 years of work. You can earn a maximum of four credits per year. In 2024, one work credit is earned for every $1,730 in earnings, meaning you need to earn at least $6,920 to receive the maximum four credits for the year.
